The Bohemia River is a beautiful place in the fall - quiet with a riot of colorful foliage. In mid summer it is quiet in the morning but awash in jet skis by midday. Stay in the shallow water of the little creeks north of the bridge and you will still find peace.

I like coming to the Bohemia in fall. The colorful leaves reflecting in the calm waters along the strangely undeveloped shoreline is a real treat. It is the middle of July now and everything is all green. The motor heads are out in great profusion with the gas prices settled back down. We will look to avoid them by paddling up river to the shallower portions and by heading into the small little marshy leads off the main branch of the river where the annoying motorboats can not go.

Our arrival time of 8:30 A.M. finds no boats out and about - just a fisherman looking to use the small beach under the route 213 bridge. There is a small parking area big enough for four or five cars. A long carry to the water gets to what use to be a nice little sand beach. But things have changed in the couple of years since I was here last. The sand has all migrated down river leaving the launch area littered with rocks from the bridge parapets. At the half tide it is easy to see them but a full high they will be submerged, so take care when launching and coming back in.

We headed up stream and investigated all the little indentations on the northwest bank of the river's northwest branch of the Bohemia River. Poking into these confined spaces and following the river to its navigable end took a better part of the day. It was an enjoyable paddle until the return when the buzzing jet skis dominated the last section of river before the bridge. Here is a movie of our adventure.....
