Near Assateague - 25.6 Miles roundtrip

By Hank McComas

Starting from 41st street in Ocean City. I drove toward Assateaugue island. About two miles before the National Seashore visitor center and the bridge over to the park, the main road turns left. I took the right fork and traveled to the end of the road to a point sticking out south into the Chincoteague Bay. Here I found a large bulkheaded parking lot and boat ramp with portable toilets. The lot faces east across the bay to the National seashore.

I launched my kayak and headed south into the bay, favoring the east side. I paddled by several low marsh islands with numerous gulls, pelicans and cormorants. I also stopped briefly at a large hunting blind with a covering to pull a substantial boat under. The open bay water was quite calm in the low wind conditions of the day, but the substantial fetch of the bay would make this a poor choice on a day with strong southerly winds. I paddled south and over to the western shore to land at the most northern of a series of islands. They were low marshy affairs of not much interest. After lunch I paddled back north to a point past my launch point. Most of the day the water was murky from the wave action. However, as I came north of the launch toward the bridge between the mainland and the barrier island, the water cleared and I could easily see the grasses, scallops and small fish in the 4-6 foot water depth. The wild horses were browsing along the shoreline. The final 45 minutes in this area was the best part of the 6 1/4 hr. trip. The southern portions of this open bay are not very interesting.
