DISCONTINUED::::121.5 and 243 MHz EPIRBS If they are out looking for you this will help. It transmits on the Search and Rescue Frequency to help locate misplaced travelers.

NOTICE: The 121.5 and 243 MHz EPIRBs have been discontinued by the Coast Guard as of January 1, 2007. Read the official press release.

This is not the 406 MHz satellite personal EPIRB that so much has been written about. It is a radio beacon broadcasting at a fixed frequency that Search and Rescue can use to locate you if they are nearby and looking for you. It is not likely to start a search unless you are close to a SAR facility. But if they are searching for you this beacon will let them home into your position.
