Wye River has a big island in the middle of it. Paddle past huge estates, the state park and flocks of Canada geese. Wave to Dick Cheney who has a house here.

For a nice fall paddle, particularly after the leaves turn, there is no prettier place than the Wye River. Located on Maryland's Eastern Shore just off Route 50 and 404, there is a nice free for hand launched non-trailered kayaks boat ramp that puts you on the river at the head of the island. One can circumnavigate the island in about 15 miles of paddling.

Make sure to take a chart as there are numerous side creeks on this convoluted river. Be careful to orient ourself as you start out to avoid going down or up the wrong creek. Other than that, the only difficult decision is to whether to go around the island clockwise or counter-clockwise.

On both banks of the river your will encounter large estates, farms and open areas of the Wye Island State reserve. There are also a number of organization holdings, such as the Aspen Institute, located here. It is a pleasant paddle in protected water.

On the eastern end of the island farthest away from the launch and just half way around the island, across from the old ferry docks, you will find a nice beach. There is a picnic table under the trees there and a spot a pot located on the remnant of the old ferry road. It is now part of the park and you can land there and use the fiacilites without trespassing.

It takes about an hour to drive here across the Bay Bridge from Baltimore. Plandn to spend about 6 hours paddling around the island. The Wye River is a great river to exlore and Wye Island is the place to start.
