Gear List and Float Plan
Using Google Earth for weather, tides, charting, and ramps.
There are several enhancements to version 5+ of Google that are very useful. One of these is the extra layers that can now be added to the Google Earth application. To add weather observations and five day forecasts of cloud cover, precipitation and temperatures, go to the layers frame on the left hand side of Google Earth. Under the Weather folder check the box for Conditions and Forecasts. For buoy observations and sea surface temperatures, open the Ocean folder, open the State of the Ocean folder and check Ocean Observations and Sea Surface Temperatures.
For a much more extensive list of marine assets including charts, ramps, marina pictures and much, much more download this Google Earth KMZ file. The features are numerous in the file. You will probably want to turn off many of the features that are not relevant for you and using them all slows Google Earth performance. This file below has tides and forecasts as the major selections. Particularly useful are the Florida Boat Ramp and Photo feature for Florida paddlers.
