I considered writing my own set of information here but Matt Broze of Mariner kayaks, inventor of the Outrigger Paddle Float rescue, has done such a great job on this topic that I simply link to his page on the subject. Mariner has several manuals published on the web with very useful information.

Learning a roll is the best method of righting your kayak. If your roll is not bomb proof in extreme conditions, learn and practice other methods of kayak re-entry. You never know when you might need one. Also, learn methods of assisted entry so you can help others that might require your assistance.
